Chapter 5

A new and rather surprising door in the history of the mental health field has opened. Professionals have begun to explore methods for using online environments to help people. How do these methods compare to in-person interventions? Although face-to-face approaches may be advantageous in many cases, there are some advantages to computer-mediated and online interventions. One obvious and frequently cited benefit that applies to all forms of online work is the pportunity to reach people who are unable to visit the professional for geographical, physical, or lifestyle reasons...

My thanks to Azy Barak for all the hard work he put into editing this book.

I welcome comments and questions on my chapter concerning cybertherapeutic theory and technique.

I thought the chapter contained some really useful information in its second part. However I can't really understand the rationale behind naming a mere description of context as theory. Theory is a body of general propositions hopefully linked to one-another used to **explain** phenomena. What Mr Suler has labeled as Cybertherapeutic Theory is the context one may (or may not) find oneself while providing help for a psychological issue **via** the Internet. The title is misleading at best, it would be appropriate for the description of a concrete theoretical framework addressing psychological issues which originated as a result of exposure/immersion/participation to cyberspace.

From wikidpedia:

" In science a theory is a testable model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise verified through empirical observation"

I think this definition very accurately fits the model I present in the chapter.
